According to the 2015 KY Diabetes Report, in 2013- Diabetes was the 7th leading cause of death in Kentucky. Both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are associated with long term complications that threaten quality of life. %. In an effort to educate those affected as well as those that are potentially affected or care for a person affected by this chronic disease, a diabetes support group was establish by the Fleming County Extension Service and the Flemings County Health Department.   This was urged by a local resident that needed more support.   The group was started in the winter of 2018.Over 12 participants have attended the monthly meetings.   Various speakers have been on hand to address the needs and concerns of the participants.   Dieticians, Pharmacists and more have explained critical issues that the participants she be cautious with.  A UK Dietetic Intern came to speak to the group about managing Carbohydrates.   Due to the intern’s presentation, one participant reported that this session just made her “mind click” and how to manage her carbs.   Since participating in the support group, the client revealed she has lost several pounds and has gotten her diet more under control and has even lost a few pounds.She feels so much better.
