Sewing is an activity that requires critical thinking, problem solving and encourages the ability to follow directions. During the first grading term of the school year, 132 students in grades 6-8 participated in a basic sewing class during their Family & Consumer Sciences class at Rockcastle County Middle School in the first semester of school 2018-19. Each student made a small makeup or shave bag. Bags were made from fabrics and materials that were donated by Extension Homemakers for the project. In post evaluations 100% of students said that these skills would be useful to them as adults. Students said the following in their evaluations:
*I felt good that I had made the bag and felt accomplished. This was my first time sewing.
*I love having something that I know I made.
*It was fun but challenging.
During the second semester, another 118 middle students sewed as a part of their FCS class. Students personalized a pillowcover for their beds or sofas. Students also learned to sew on a button and repair rips in clothing. All of the students completed their pillowcover during the class time. Following the project one of the students who has a challenge with class work stated, "I thought somebody would have to do this (for me). My pillow is prettiest and I did it myself."
