Lee County Kentucky has a beef herd mainly of cow calf production of around 3500 mother cows. Over the past few years I have noticed that many producers where reporting very little or no producers where using a year round mineral program, surveys were also conducted to prove this. I worked with one of the University of Kentucky beef specialist Dr. Jeff Lehmkuhler in developing a beef mineral program for many of the Lee County beef producers. We developed a hands on mineral program where many farmers brought to the meeting the mineral they were feeding their livestock and I collected several different brands and mixes from the local suppliers. We compared all the minerals that we had collected and from the mineral needs of the cattle showed from a price and needs prospective which minerals they needing to be feeding. From the survey 60 percent of the 25 participants where using the insufficient mineral. From the latest survey of the 60 percent that where using an insufficient mineral 90 percent of them are using the correct year round mineral program.
