According to the National Safety Council Injury Facts 2017, accidental injury has become the number 3 cause of deaths for the first time in U.S. history. Adair County Extension works to decrease the number of youth getting injured on the farm and at home.

The 4-H program collaborated with Progressive Farmer Foundation, Adair County School System, local businesses, community agencies, and local leaders to conduct the 21st Farm and Home Safety Days. Over 120 volunteers contributed to the program’s success.

More than 360 1st grade and 5th-grade students attended the interactive safety booths that addressed fire, tractor, ATV, pesticide, grain, first aid, livestock, equipment, and general safety over a two day period. A pre-survey showed that 83% of the youth who participated in the Safety Day program had never used a fire extinguisher. Each participant received training on the proper way to use and got to use a fire extinguisher. 58% of the participants stated that they never or only sometimes wear a helmet when riding on an ATV. All participants received training on how what is the best size helmet for their age and what can happen if they do not wear a helmet.

Among the adults participating in Farm and Home Safety Days, 79% identified one or more changes they plan to adapt to reduce the risk of accidents in their home or farm.  78 percent of participants stated they had never used a fire extinguisher before the safety day.   All participants learned how to use and used a fire extinguisher that day.
