Plan of Work: Promoting Sustainable, Healthy Lifestyles and Communities

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Currently the Magoffin County Extension Homemakers organization is one of the largest civic and volunteer organizations in Magoffin County with 65 members. Extension Homemakers work to improve the quality of life for their families and communities through leadership development, volunteer service, and education.

Magoffin County Extension Homemakers are active and involved with the Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association in the Northeast Area and at the State level. Magoffin County Extension Homemakers were awarded 2nd Place in Membership (Largest Overall) Increase Award at the 2018 State KEHA Annual Meeting for having 37 new members for the 2017-2018 year. Magoffin County Extension Homemaker membership continues to increase due to mostly word of mouth and the positive impact Homemakers make in our community. During the 2 year vacancy in the Family and Consumer Sciences Education agent position the Homemakers have taken it upon themselves to continue to grow their organization.  Several members attended the 2018 KEHA Annual Meeting in Louisville this past spring and have taught the lessons they learned during the conference. The special interest clubs that include quilt guilds and sewing clubs have grown in membership.

Members of Magoffin County Extension Homemakers give back to our community. Events include several fundraising efforts to support their scholarship fund, working at the local food pantry, volunteering during holiday dinners served to the public, participating and assisting with several 4-H Youth Development events, and serving as active members in the County Extension Council. The Magoffin County Homemakers teach several classes and leader lessons throughout the year as well. The Independent Sector reports that the new value of volunteer time is $24.14 per hour as of April, 2017. Magoffin County Homemakers reported over 2,000 volunteer hours in the past year. Meaning that they contributed over $48,000 worth of time to their community.
