During summer break, 4-H offers day camps for youth from 5-19 years old. Bullitt 4-H and the Bullitt County Family Resource contact work together to make the camps a success. 4-H has many things to offer so there was much to choose from which makes it a new camp every month during the school year. During school clubs, youth were excited to learn about cooking and nutrition. So we decided to offer more cooking camps. This year had returning 4-Hers for these day camps. They have already learned about basic skills of measuring, using a knife, cleaning your hands properly, and they would cook as a group. This time the 4-Hers learned the understanding of food lables, preparing a healthy meal, cutting skills, baking and food safety.
Twenty-five who attended the camp improved their cooking skills after the camp, communication skills, team work, awareness of safety and youth learned much more about cooking and nutrition. 100% of the youth gained confidence in cooking and even prepared a meal for their parents.
