According to the National Institute of Health reports showed that 61.5% of children age 9-13 do not participate in any organized physical activity during non-school hours and another 22.6% do not engage in any free time physical activity. In conjunction with a partnership through the Owsley County Extension Service and the Owsley County Board of Education, the Nutrition Education Program "Professor Popcorn" is taught throughout the school year to 1st through 6th grades.

The purpose of this program is to educate children about healthy eating as well as proper amounts of physical activity needed. Findings identified through pre and posttests during this program showed that students in 6th grade did very well in increasing their physical activity as well as the intensity of their activities. According to results they showed 75% improvement in overall activity and even increased their vigorous activity as well. Screen time was also decreased as a result of increasing daily activity as well. One student stated that “I had noticed I feel better during the day as a result of increasing my physical activity.
