Life Style Changes

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Marion County Cooperative Extension Office partnered with one of our local public housing authorities. I started a series of classes with our Healthy Choices for Every body curriculum. The program was offered once a month for families.

At the beginning of each class, we would talked about what we learned from the previous month before. Sometimes the discussion would get a little lengthy, but then you realize that they were listening and practicing what they had learned. I would then start the lesson. And after the lesson, as we would get ready for the food demonstration and tasting. All of the families would go and wash their hands and help prepare the dish we were making each class. In return not only asking question about the recipe, but they were very curious about were the different foods originated.

Two of ladies shared with our class. One stated that because of our lesson on Food Safety, she realized that she could have possible made her family sick at some point in time. She states that they always thawed their food out on the counter. Another one said she didn’t realize until after the lesson on Knowing your Limits that we need to only have one teaspoon of salt in our diet all day.

Working with this group, teaching the seven required lesson it was a proven fact that 100% of this group learned and made life style changes just by attending class and listening to the lesson.
