Kentucky is one of the leading States for childhood obesityin the United States. Drakes Creek Middle School is located in Warren County,Kentucky. One of the 8th grade teachers reached out to Warren CountySNAP-Ed Assistants and asked for Nutrition Education Programs to be brought tothe classroom. Students were struggling with consuming fruits and vegetables.
One of the Warren County SNAP-Ed Assistants presented aseries to an 8th grade class which featured the Teen Cuisinecurriculum. The series included lessons on nutrition, food safety, foodpreparation and more. Students also prepared hands-on recipes with each lesson.Fifty-two percent of students showed improvement in their consumption ofvegetables, while 67% of students showed improvement in their consumption offruits. Many students stated that they planned to continue making healthyrecipes at home and making healthier choices in everyday life.
