Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

One of the largest employers in Metcalfe County called upon the SNAP-Ed (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education) assistant.  The director of Human Resources wanted to provide an opportunity for all employees to take better control of their health.  According to recent data from the CDC, 20% of all Metcalfe Countians have been diagnosed with diabetes.  Heart Disease is also prevalent, with 45% of adults having been diagnosed with hypertension and 371 deaths in 2014 due to cardiovascular disease, which is higher than the state and national average.  The SNAP-Ed assistant agreed to conduct the Healthy Choices for Every Body curriculum and provide employees with the 7 core lessons in the course of 3 months.  Employees were given a choice to participate with insurance discounts applied for participation.  This group had to come to the classes on their own time.  Each class did provide a lesson and a healthy recipe tasting.  There were 17 participants ranging in age from teens to seniors.  The group did see some dramatic positive impacts including a significant drop in the amount of soda consumed.  On entry, 10 people met the recommendation to drink soda never or rarely.  On exit, all 17 people met that goal.  The group also benefited by upping their fruit intake every day with 53% of participants eating more fruit.  Most people did not plan meals before shopping.  At the end of the program, 93% planned meals before shopping more often.  Also, 13 out of 17 people now compare food prices and check their pantry before going shopping which shows a 76% improvement from the first class.  The Human Resource Director is pleased with the program and has already asked the SNAP-Ed Assistant to offer the program again next year.
