Block of the Month

Author: Glenna Wooten

Planning Unit: Perry County CES

Major Program: Master Clothing Volunteer

Plan of Work: Embracing Life As We Age

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Master Clothing Volunteer in Perry County teaches a sewing construction program each month at the University of Kentucky Perry County Cooperative Extension Service to anyone interested in learning to accurately cut fabrics, sew accurate seams, and construct a quilt block.  Each month a different quilt block is taught which gives participants a chance to perfect their sewing skills.  Another county clothing volunteer shares information on sewing/quilting related tools which could make sewing more enjoyable.

An average of 20 participants attend each month along with a male youth attending during the summer with his grandmother while school was not in session. They were both excited about learning to sew together. Each month, participants bring back their finished block from the previous month and share information on what they have done and how they have used the information learned.

Quilting techniques were mentioned in an early workshop so some participants are using the Quilt as You Go method to construct their quilts which means that their quilt will be finished by the end of the year. Others will learn the traditional way later this year.

All participants have gained knowledge, skills, and self-confidence in sewing.  Several non-sewers have purchased sewing machines and now bring them to class so they can become more familiar with their individual machines in order to confidently sew at home.
