Author: Patsy Smith

Planning Unit: Jackson County CES

Major Program: Food Preparation

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

During the winter of 2017, in collaboration with Mckee Elementary School, Save the Children Foundation and the Jackson County Cooperative Extension Service SNAP-Ed program a 6 week Cooking with Kids after school program was taught to twenty 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Ninety percent of these students were low income, latch-key youth. During the six week program the SNAP-Ed Assistant taught the youth the following life skills:  Food Safety, Proper Hand Washing, Knife Safety, Basic Measurement, Cooking Skills and Hands on Cooking using the My Plate Curriculum. Forty percent of these students had never tried Stir Fry or whole grains before.  Ninety percent said that they would ask their parents to help them prepare these recipes along with other nutritious recipes that were given to them from the My Plate Curriculum. These youth enjoyed learning the hands on cooking skills of chopping up fruits and vegetables for the nutritious recipes.
