Outcome: Initial Outcome
I have been working with a small scale producer in eastern Kentucky that producers a little bit of everything. One particular project that we have been working on involves creating chicken 'hoop' tunnels around his garden to repel pests, keep garden waste to a minimum and allow his chickens a place to walk around but still safe from potential predators. He plans to use the chickens to produce eggs that will be sold at the local farmer's market, increasing the variety of products currently available to the local community. The majority of the patrons at the local farmer's market are resource limited and participate in the SNAP program. He uses this as an opportunity to help other local community members better understand the local food system and its importance to the local economy. This project helps him provide a suitable place for his livestock, an improved livelihood for his family and opportunity to engage the community to share knowledge.
