Major Program: Stand Up to Falling

Plan of Work: Embracing Life As We Age

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Kentucky’s current population of seniors (65+) is 13.3%. In 2012, according to the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center, over 7,000 adults 65 years of age or older were hospitalized and approximately 27,000 older adults were treated for fall related injuries in Kentucky hospitals. To address this issue locally, Logan County presented Stand Up To Falling to five participants. After the program, 80% of participants strongly agreed and 20% agreed that they had increased their understanding of how to prevent falls. 100% of participants indicated as a result of this program they believe that there is something they each can do to reduce the chances of falling.  Also, as a result of this program, participants indicated the following behavior that they intend to address:

Vision checks – 60%

Exercise and physical activity – 80%

Home safety – 60%

Fall prevention programs demonstrate positive change in both knowledge and behavior. Fall prevention programs have the potential to save an estimated $18-21,000 in health care costs per person, in cases involving fatality or hospitalization. With seven total individuals participating in Stand Up To Falling, Logan County potentially saved $126,000-$147,000 in Medicaid claims.
