Win With Wood:

The purpose of this event is to acquaint/familiarize Kentucky youth with forestry/natural resources industries and potential career opportunities. This one day event encompasses nine individual and one team competition in forestry and wood technology for youth in the junior and senior age groups. The competitive events are: Compass and Pacing, Forestry Equipment Identification, Tree Identification, Tree Measurement, Wood Identification, Woodworking Tool Identification, Soil Judging, Invasive Species, Individual Woodworking Project and Team Woodworking project.

The 2017 event took place on October 03, 2017 at the UK Wood Utilization Center, Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability, Quicksand, KY. This year we had a total of 127 student competitors, (52 girls and 75 boys), 9 Advisers, and 50 workers for a total of 186. Schools and clubs attending were: Breathitt County FFA (Future Farmers of America), Buckhorn High School FFA, Carter County 4-H, Cordia High School FFA, Knott County Central High School FFA, Lee County High School FFA, and Magoffin County 4-H. Fifty support personnel participated in the event which included cooperative extension agents, agriculture teachers, UK personnel, Kentucky Division of Forestry personnel, forest industry leaders, and other interested individuals. Participating youth demonstrated through their preparation in the individual events, they had acquired forestry and wood technology skills, natural resource awareness, as well as awareness of career opportunities as was evidenced by their performance at the Win With Wood program. Awards were presented to all participants. The Senior Overall Winner who received a medallion was: Jacob Peterson (first place winner), Magoffin Co. 4-H, Elijah Rudd, Magoffin Co. 4-H, second place winner and Skylar Campbell. Lee Co. FFA (third place winner). Jacob Peterson, the overall winner received the $500 to attend the UK College of Agriculture. This scholarship has been endowed by the Kentucky Forest Industries Association and the University of Kentucky. The Junior Overall Winners who received medallions: Emma Riggs (first place winner), Carter Co. 4-H, Neveah Kouns (second place winner), Carter County 4-H, and Jennings Ewing (third place winners) Carter County 4-H.
