Plan of Work: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Regular physical activity is fun and healthy, but statistics show according to a 2016 report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 54% of Kentuckians engage in less than 150 minutes per week of physical activity. The "Couch Potato Challenge", a 12-week newsletter-based walking program is designed for individuals who are struggling to begin an exercise program, or have not been physically active in a long time. Vicki Wynn, Family & Consumer Sciences agent, led the group in 12 weekly sessions. Each week, motivational messages were sent via mail, social media posts and email, and was accompanied by a newsletter featuring various topics related to the positive effects of increased physical activity.

Nineteen participants took the challenge and encouraged friends, family, students and co-workers to join them. 100% increased the amount of walking they did on a weekly basis. One participant reported losing 15.5 pounds during the 12-week challenge and is encouraging her walking partner to set goals for increasing physical activity. A teacher's aide participated in walking activities during the school day in the gymnasium, and students began accompanying her during walks. The positive influence she shared with students and others at the school was an added benefit to the program.

At the end of the challenge, a face-to-face meeting was held to discuss participant achievement. This revealed 60% were walking 150 minutes per week. Additional follow-up reports indicate 80% are still engaged in weekly physical activity. Because of the program, churches, the local city park, and school gymnasiums have opened their doors to allow safe walking opportunities for residents. From all indications, the number of couch potatoes in Marshall County are on the decline.
