Outcome: Initial Outcome
About 1.7 million toaster ovens are sold in the United States each year. Twenty-seven percent of households us it only for toasting foods (Energy Star Market Industry Scoping Report: Toaster Ovens, November 2011). Toady’s toaster ovens have capability beyond toasting and use one-half to one-third less energy than conventional ovens. Additionally, smaller yield recipes may be more efficiently prepared in a toaster oven. Individuals who understand the advantages of toaster ovens may find them using the appliance to save energy and prepare more healthful meals.
The Jefferson County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences wanted to assist older adults with safe and correct kitchen appliance use in an effort to increase meal preparation at home. Seven classes were held reaching 70 participants and focusing on toaster oven use and cooking. Classes consisted of lecture, demonstration and some hands-on activities. Food safety was stressed, as knowledge in this area is essential in reducing kitchen fires. Post lesson evaluation showed 75% planned to use newly learned food safety skills and 64% planned to use it beyond toasting and 60% will be using it more to save on energy costs. In a 3 month follow up evaluation, 7 individuals purchased a toaster oven, 46 individuals shared information with others and 50 individuals are preparing more and healthier foods at home.
