Beef and Forage Basics Pay Off for Morgan County Producers

Author: Sarah Fannin

Planning Unit: Morgan County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Livestock Forage Interface

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Beef and forage production remains the backbone of the agricultural economy in Morgan County following the loss of income from tobacco production in the early to mid-2000’s.Strengthening these two areas is a priority of the Morgan County Ag Development Board.

Based on strong forage programming and demonstration projects at the Extension Farm, more forage producers are participating in hay testing.  A record number for Morgan County of both samples (75) submitted and number of participants (27) was obtained this year.

Also, for the first time in Morgan County, in conjunction with a local veterinary practice, Bull Soundness Exams were offered by the ANR Extension program at a greatly reduced price.  Fourteen producers who had never used BSE’s in the past, took advantage of the program.  Of the 18 bulls tested, 2 failed.  The potential loss of the calf crop from these two bulls alone was over $40,000.  The startling reality of this situation made for quite the conversation at subsequent beef meetings and agent visits to farms and feed stores.  Ripple effects have also included greater Extension support, participation and attendance at educational beef events.
