Research shows that family mealtime is important in child development and student success in school. The kitchen is often the center for busy families that struggle to balance work, school and community activities.  Unfortunately very few family meals may occur.  Breakfast is often a quick a cup of coffee and a pastry on the way out the door and dinner is from a drive-through bag while homework is being completed. The 2017-18 KEHA lesson Baking and Breaking Bread Together focuses on bringing the family back into the kitchen together for cooking and eating together.  The Breckinridge County FCS agent compiled and presented the lesson based on the Super Star Chef Kneads a Little Dough.Leader trainings were presented in eight Lincoln Trail Area counties to seventy-three Extension Homemakers to share with their community clubs.  Participants were led through a lesson to review essential baking ingredients and basic baking skills.  The recipes presented demonstrated how cooking can bring a family together for a fun baking activity and how fresh warm bread can make a simple meal special.  This focused audience of grandparents were encouraged to share baking skills with young people and pass on family recipes.Post program evaluations reported participants gained knowledge relating to food preparation and presentation skills. Also the participants reported an increased appreciation for family mealtime and valuing family traditions.Baking and Breaking Bread Together helped participates recognize the importance of togetherness for family and individual wellness and served as a tasty reminder of why the kitchen can truly be the center positive family life.
