According to recent research data, the diagnosis of diabetes doubled from 2000-2015. In Kentucky, the cost of diabetes in the billions of dollars in lost work and wages. Diabetes is a very serious chronic condition that can have harsh physical complications even life-threatening consequences if not managed effectively with diet and medication as prescribed. We know that with proper education that individuals can control and in some instances prevent the onset of the condition with lifestyle changes that include monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, losing weight, getting active and quitting smoking, (2017 Kentucky Diabetes Fact Sheet)
The Franklin Co. Cooperative Extension Service partners with a Diabetes Educator to offer Taking Ownership of Your Diabetes. The series ran for 10 weeks and 10 adults participating (eight women and two males.). The classes covered a variety of topics, case studies etc. Participants felt comfortable asking questions and sharing their challenges. As a result of the series, the response was very positive. An individual lost 20 pounds and their A1C went from 8.3 to 6.9%. Others stated weight loss, better quality of life, increased confidence in meal planning, monitoring glucose levels. We will conduct a 3 month follow up to find how if their positive behavior changes continue to improve.
