More than twenty-five percent of adults in Fayette County lack physical activity, which contributes to 59% of adults being overweight and 26% being obese according to KY Health Facts.org. Fayette Family and Consumer Sciences has been providing opportunities for adults to be physically active at minimal or no costs for many years. Get fit Fayette county has taught and encouraged physical activity and healthy habits in several ways. The programs that have been available are Small Steps to Health and Wealth (5 participants in 2018), The Couch Potato Challenge (80 Fayette county participants), Yoga and Zumba classes (between 8-12 participants per class).
During the spring, over 200 members of the Kentucky Homemaker Association in the Bluegrass area were active in the Couch Potato Challenge, where they participated in 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Evaluation data shows that 30% completed the entire 12 weeks program, while at least 50% were more physically active that they had been prior to the program. In Fayette /county the program participants were encouraged and lead through a series of weekly walks to visit the local parks and walk the many trails that are available. The Yoga classes are done in a partnership with a certified Yoga instructor and have been so well received that the initial six-week session has become a regular weekly class, with six to eight participants each week.
Get Fit Fayette County is an ongoing program with more programs and data to be gained in the rest of 2018.
