Major Program: Food Preparation

Plan of Work: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices and Citizen Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

As the local food movement continues to grow, Fayette county residents want to know what is in their food and how it is prepared. They also want to learn techniques and how to cook from scratch for the taste or for economical reasons. The Fayette County Family and Consumer Science program presented a series of six baking programs in the first half of 2018. During each session participants discussed the science of baking (i.e. leavening, ingredients). Participants were a varied group men and women, consisting of seniors, older youth and young women. 70 people participated in one or more of the programs with more than 60% attending all six sessions. They reported an improved accuracy with measuring, and improved food safety skills.  Over 75% have used the skills they learned to prepare baked products for their family and friends. They reported that they feel confident in preparing other recipes and in using yeast to bake bread and rolls. The participants who attend the gluten free baking session reported that they have now tried baking products with many different flours and gluten free ingredients that they were unsure of before the class.  The class will continue into 2018-19 and the majority of participants will continue with the program
