Planning Unit: Livingston County CES

Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Encouraging youth to become skillful, productive, contributing members of our community.

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

West Kentucky 4-H Camp serves 4-H guests for eight weeks of the Summer schedule for camping groups comprised of two to six counties and specialty groups. Livingston County 4-H clientele participated in Cloverbud Camp and 4-H Summer Camp with record attendance. According to the 2016 U.S. Census, 2017 estimated to have a poverty rate of 14.5% with a population of 9,269 in Livingston County. 4-H Camp fees have increased annually but still remain lower than competitive camps due to the efforts of the County 4-H Council and Extension District Board. Over half of the youth registrants requested financial assistance to subsidize the cost of the registration fee. Seven donors donated almost $3,000 to facilitate partial needs for 4-H Camp. With a 15% increase in registrations, compared to last year's attendance, the challenge of securing volunteer leadership proved to be a challenge. The six county camping group was able to work together to secure the supervisory requirement to fill the camp to 98% capacity. All the youth that attended 4-H Summer Camp with Livingston County learned to be responsible and accountable for their finances, times, scheduling and personal hygiene. These youth also gained new knowledge, experiences and met new friends that they will continue to have throughout their 4-H career. Youth were able to select four classes to attend for three days provided by trained staff and volunteers. Youth enjoyed nutritious food choices to include the ever popular salad bar. Only at West KY 4-H Camp, are youth able to enjoy horseback riding and Equine Science. Youth that attended Cloverbud Camp with their parents enjoyed learning about science, nature, canoeing, archery, swimming and crafts with their parent/guardian. A father stated, "I really love how each County's family was able to be in a cabin together". Livingston County 4-H was able to gain a male volunteer from Cloverbud Camp to camp at Summer Camp with an older sibling thus enabling the addition of seven more male campers. Three county youth aged into leadership roles as Teen Counselors and one aged into an adult leader role. The junior and senior leaders all

All youth and adults surveyed reported having a positive experience in a safe environment. All indicated that they tried or learned a new skills. All reported that they would  continue in the 4-H Camping program next year. Every year, the camping program in Livingston County grows and youth begin anticipating the summer fun in late December.
