Major Program: Youth Fruit & Vegetable Access

Plan of Work: Becoming Fit Physically

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 13.2 percent of Kentucky youth eat fruits and vegetables five or more times a day. The national average is 21.4 percent. Based on this information the Literacy, Eating, and Activity for Preschool (LEAP) program was taught in the both Grant County and Williamstown school Districts during the 2017-18 school year to the 250 Head Start and preschool children by the Family and Consumer Sciences Program Assistant.

Each classroom was read a story about nutrition and food. The accompanying lessons feature a tasting of an uncommon healthy food or physical activity related to the story. Throughout the course of the year, students tried turnips, kiwi, and carrots, as well as learned about increasing physical activity. Other important lessons featured handwashing and oral hygiene. Four lessons were presented in the fall semester, as well as another four in the spring.

Once completing the program over 97% of the students tasted the healthy snacks and 100% learned the importance of hand washing and oral hygiene. Students also went home with parent newsletters that featured nutrition information and recipes with new foods for the students to try at home with their families.
