Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Many services and events in the community wouldn’t be possible without the assistance from community members giving freely of their time. However, only 24.2% of Kentucky residents volunteer their time according to the Corporation for National and Community Service. Franklin County Cooperative Extension Services’ Master Gardener volunteer association, the Capital Area Master Gardener (CAMG) association, is one of the most active associations in the area. This past year the association has reported over 600 volunteer hours. These volunteer hours have been comprised of a city-wide Arbor Day festival (Reforest Frankfort), annual plant sale to fund a college scholarship, various youth and adult programs, and Franklin County fair’s fruit and vegetable show. Based on the estimated value of volunteer hours ($21.17 per hour) for Kentucky given by Independent Sector, a nonpartisan coalition of nonprofits, foundations and corporate giving programs, the CAMG provided over $12,700 of service back to the community. The group continues to grow and this fall the Franklin County and Woodford County Cooperative Extension Service offices will begin a new class of Master Gardeners.
