Plan of Work: A Well Farmed Countryside

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Even though Henry County is heavily steeped in animal production, forage production, and tobacco production, many Henry County residents devote many hours and care to their beloved backyard gardens, and each year, many residents contact the Henry County Extension Office for assistance with gardening questions. With this knowledge, the Henry County Extension Office and the Henry County Public Library joined together to produce a four part gardening series. All session were held at the Henry County Public Library, and covered gardening topics such as soil health, planting, disease control, pest control, different gardening styles, storage/preparing of crops, and garden planning. This series was planned in late spring and summer in a way that residence could attend a class, and then immediately apply that information to their gardens. Over the course of the four sessions, nine participants attended the sessions from the first to last session, and time was made where participants could ask questions one on one with the ANR agent. All residents stated that they learned something new at each session, and six stated that they were actively changing gardening practices from soil testing and pest control. Two participants stated they felt more comfortable because of the class, and joined the local farmers’ market. A side benefit was that the Henry County Summer ANR intern had the ability to teach about aspects of food storage in front of a small crowd. This helped boost her confidence with teaching.
