Pike County Family & Consumer Sciences and Homemaker leadership has always been an exceptional group of community-minded individuals. In 2017-18, the Pike County Homemakers were faced with an exceptional set of challenges. As part of the Northeast Area Homemakers, they were charged with hosting the state KEHA Annual Meeting in Louisville in May 2018.Unforseen circumstances led the Pike County Homemakers to take on a larger-than-expected role in the meeting, and because of their training and dedication, they were successful.
A core group of 6 Pike County members dedicated themselves to every facet of providing hands-on skills training while at the Annual Session. The members wrote instructions, gathered supplies, prepared teaching samples and made hundreds of kits for attendees. While at the Annual.Session, Pike County leaders taught their own hands-on classes, demonstrating the leadership skills of using a variety of teaching styles, active listening, organizing groups, and customer service. The Pike County delegates also served as voting members, making decisions on important issues facing their organization. Additionally, Pike County members took leadership roles as hostess or registration attendants to welcome people, solve problems and provide general assistance and knowledge. Two Pike Co delegates were first-time attendees and showed remarkable tenacity and willingness to learn and serve.
