“Whoever said that these were the golden years didn’t know what they were talking about”! Many Senior Citizens struggle with increased weight, lack of physical activity, and struggle with depression due to the loss of a spouse or feeling lack of purpose. However, this group of five senior women decided to dig deep and find the gold in their Golden Years. The participants had just completed Weight the Reality Series with the Family Consumer Science Agent through the Breckinridge County Extension Office. The women were looking for another avenue to continue their success. The Nutrition Education Program also held through the Extension Office was just that opportunity to do so. The Healthy Choices for Everybody curriculum was taught twice month. Some lessons taught included My Plate, which incorporates using the five food groups in proper proportions. Knowing Your Limits, which assists in understanding how to decrease fat, sugar, and salt in daily meals. Eating Better on Budget and Planning Meals, which enables food dollars to be stretched and more nutritional meals to be served. Together with each lesson taught a healthy food demonstration was done and also sampled by the participants. The participants were also given an exercise DVD called Make a Change, Start at Home Series. Through incorporating the good habits taught throughout Weight the Reality and Healthy Choices all the ladies came away with either continued weight-loss or were able to maintain the same weight all the while enjoying good food and good fellowship in the Golden Years.
