Major Program: Health 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Nutrition Education through Cooperative Extension

Outcome: Initial Outcome

McCracken County 4-H partnered with Morgan Elementary to facilitate the Born Learning Academy. This educational event was held at Morgan Elementary School in Paducah, KY. Born Learning Academy is a grant funded program through Toyota of Kentucky and United Way. It is designed to provide information to parents of children ages 0-5, to prepare them for Kindergarten. Our local program attendees included six adults, and eleven youth between the ages of 3 and 5. Community partnerships are utilized to provide parents with direct contact to local resources that can be used during this time in their children’s lives. Topics covered were understanding child development, simply ways to create learning opportunities in the home with everyday activities, and easy ways to incorporate healthy eating into their children’s lives. I facilitated the nutrition component, and demonstrated several simple healthy recipes. Participants (youth and adults) all participated in the food demonstration component. Everyone enjoyed the recipes and the fruit rice crunch rollups were a hit! It was a fun way to incorporate fresh fruit in to their child’s diet. One parent stated that it was easy enough for her child to do on her own. Another parent mentioned her child being able to fix the roll-up for breakfast. Incorporating fresh fruits in the morning has the potential to positively affect their entire day. Once the nutrition component was over, participants began observing physical bench markers to gauge the development level of their child. This component was led by the Morgan’s Family Resource Center Coordinator. This program was very exciting, and everyone enjoyed themselves. This hands-on delivery method was full of information and fun!
