Pre-K Classes LEAP for Nutrition

Author: Morgan Rousseau

Planning Unit: Livingston County CES

Major Program: Youth Fruit & Vegetable Access

Plan of Work: Health and nutrition education, physical activity, aging, and chronic disease awareness/prevention.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

During the spring 2018, semester 82 preschool students at North Livingston Elementary and South Livingston Elementary Schools took part in the Literacy Education and Activity for Primary (LEAP) program. Each month students hear a story focused around nutritious eating or an active lifestyle, create their own healthy snack, and take part in a physical activity and craft that increase fine and gross motor skills, creativity, and independent thinking. 100% of preschoolers tried one or more new foods this semester and 94% (80/85 students) of students participating were able to create a snack independently, without the help of an adult. Students in this program have also learned basic hygiene skills including hand washing, bathing, and brushing their teeth regularly. New foods students reported for the very first time included blackberries, raspberries, mango, pineapple, yogurt, olives, carrots and broccoli. The preschoolers were encouraged to take two bites of each snack before deciding if they enjoyed it or not. Additionally, every student has received a new tooth brush and had a dental check-up or teeth cleaning within 6 months as a part of this collaboration with Family First. In addition to these 82 preschoolers, an additional 296 primary aged students took part in a nutrition education program during the school year.
