In 2017-18, twelve Livingston County Homemakers worked diligently to hone artistic and heritage skills through Family & Consumer Sciences programming initiatives, while actively engaging in Master Clothing Volunteer workshops. These twelve ladies met monthly to learn quilting, paper piecing, basic sewing, serger, and textile alteration techniques. Each lady committed 7-14 hours per month engaged in workshops learning skills, which each use in producing income for themselves. These homemakers are now able to provide sewing and quilting services for others. Since beginning and regularly engaging in quilting and sewing workshops at the Livingston Cooperative Extension Office, two women are now providing services in heirloom quilt repair and another three are part-time seamstresses, providing clothing and textiles alteration workout of their homes. By practicing and learning new sewing skills monthly, this homemaker group has expanded financial contributions to their families via artistic expression and heritage skill development. These ladies take an active part in the Quilts of Valor program, sending quilts to active and retired military veterans. This past year the group worked together to make 12 blankets to send to the Western Kentucky chapter of Project Linus, which aided in giving out 1,200 blankets to children following the Marshall County High School shooting. The group completed thirteen "Farm Girl Vintage" quilts this year to serve as gifts to loved ones and were able to work and volunteer with AQS (American Quilt Society) during the 2018 Spring Paducah Quilt Show. In addition to financial contributions, these quilting and sewing skills have allowed two of these homemakers to now teach and instruct classes in a volunteer capacity for the community and 4-H youth.
