According to the Centers for Disease Control at least forty percent of Elliott County's population is obese. The Partnership for a Healthy Elliott County decided to have a program using funds from a grant through Marshall University for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The program, called "Kid's Bucks" provides children with coupons to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the Elliott County Farmer's Market. Each time a child visits the market they will have a short nutrition program and receive $5.00 in coupons. In Elliott County 53 children received $265 in coupons to be spent at the Farmer's Market. According to farmer's market records, $253 of Kid's Bucks were redeemed in purchases of fresh fruits and vegetables.
