21st Century Learning Grants support the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.  For the second summer, 4-H agent collaborated with the Cards After Hours program and this year offered a two week session (one hour per day) which introduced students to 4-H.  The group participated in lessons related to core curriculum including Communication, Leadership, FCS, SET and Health.  The goal was to provide students opportunities to experience new activities and guidance from a caring adult.  The group learned:

1.  The science behind ice cream in a bag;

2.  The basics of series and parallel circuits;

3.  How to read, follow and safely complete the steps in a recipe;

4.  The importance of working together as a team;

5.  The basics of putting together a demonstration;

The teacher volunteer stated that over half of the group had no previous experience reading and following a recipe to prepare food safely.  All twelve demonstrated the skills learned by following the completing a recipe for chocolate chip muffins in a team setting.
