The terms vegetarian and vegan have become more and more prevalent in our society. Studies show that 5% of all Americans are now either vegetarian of vegan. Back in 2009, that percentage was only 1%, so there has been a huge increase of people following this diet. The Estill County FCS agent conducted a Vegetarian 101 lesson to all of the counties in the Bluegrass area as a Homemaker Training. In this program, the participants learned the different definitions related to these two diets as well as some facts and myths. The program was not a ploy to get more people to join these diets but to inform them of what they were for reasons such as: accommodating a vegetarian/vegan family member or homemaker attending a meeting.  The participants also learned of various health conditions that may be helped by following a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. A posttest showed that 100% of the participants are now more aware of terms affiliated with vegetarianism. 95% of the participants will try at least one vegetarian dish in the coming month. 100% discovered some simple tips for making their favorite recipes vegetarian. Lastly, 100% of the participants plan to change their diet to improve their overall health and well-being, this can mean that they will add more fruits and vegetables into their diet, or they can exercise more often.
