Stormwater Lesson Training for LFUCG Teachers
Author: John McMaine

Major Program: Water and Soil Quality and Conservation
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Describe the Issue or Situation.
Local teachers often lack the specialized technical background to teach about the effects of impervious cover on stormwater, runoff, flooding, and water quality. Because of this, this piece of the water cycle is often missed. Teachers need easy to understand and implement ways to teach these concepts to students.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
BAE Extension partnered with LFUCG to train 22 Fayette County Public School trachers to deliver a lesson plan that teaches about the challenges faced because of impervious cover.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
22 teachers
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
After the training, approximately 25% of the teachers verbally indicated that they would implement some form of the lesson into future teaching (teachers were from all different backgrounds and it was not applicableto include in topics like English). A majority verbally indicated that they would change their own behavior and a large majority verbally indicated that they had gained new knowledge themselves. It should be noted that these numbers were approximate and were collected in a qualitative manner (personal visits after the demonstration) and no quantitative surveys or pre and post tests were collected.
The results were very positive to the point that McMaine and collaborators are committing to developing Extension training materials in the next year for the activity.
