Teacher Appreciation Luncheon helps Support 4-H Camp

Author: Rhonda Jewell

Planning Unit: Caldwell County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Develop Individuals for Volunteer and Leadership Roles

Outcome: Initial Outcome

4-H Camp provides an opportunity for young people to develop essential life skills that help them build character, develop a sense of independence, and become responsible individuals. There are many life lessons to be learned at camp from learning to respect others, money management, and responsibility for oneself to name a few. According to the American Camping Association, “camp provides children with a community of caring adults who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value.”  Child development professionals recognize camping experiences as a valuable tool in helping children mature socially, emotionally, intellectually, morally and physically. Michael Popkin, Ph.D., family therapist and founder of Active Parenting states that “The building blocks of self-esteem are belonging, learning, and contributing. Camps offer unique opportunities for children to succeed in these three vital areas and even beyond home and school.”

Even though the benefits are great there are many families that cannot afford to send their child to 4-H Camp.  In order to make 4-H camp a more affordable option the Caldwell County 4-H Council Fundraising Committee hosted a cookout in which they raised $2,535.48.  This helped to decrease the cost of camp by $40 per camper.

The luncheon was hosted for teachers, staff and administration of all the schools in Caldwell County, including the Vocational School during Teacher Appreciation Week.  This was a collaborative effort between the Caldwell County 4-H Council and the banks in Caldwell County. Each of the four banks sponsored meals for a school by donating $600 to the cause. The 4-H volunteers prepared the meat, did the labor and delivered the meals. This win-win opportunity allowed Caldwell County 4-H and Farmers Bank, First Southern, Planters and Fredonia Valley Bank to show their appreciation for all they do for the youth of Caldwell County.

In addition to the fundraiser, the 4-H Council also received $4,239.75 in scholarship money from local businesses, civic organizations and past 4-H members. The scholarship gave 18 campers the opportunity to attend camp that otherwise would not have been able to go. Without the support of our donors these campers would not have the financial means to attend and gain the life lessons and skills that 4-H Camp helps to provide.
