Enhancing public understanding of Homelessness in Kentucky

Relevance: On any given night, at least 5,000 individuals are experiencing homelessness in Kentucky. This number is likely underestimated, as it is difficult to account for every unhoused person. Beyond lacking stable shelter, many of these individuals face significant interpersonal challenges and struggle with mental health disorders. In fact, majority of people experiencing homelessness live with at least one mental health condition, often accompanied by substance use issues. As the number of unhoused individuals continues to grow, it is crucial for the public to gain a deeper understanding of the hardships they face and explore effective ways to support this vulnerable population.
Response: With homelessness on the rise, it is essential for the public to gain a deeper understanding of this population and learn how to engage with and support them effectively. To address this need, the Family and Consumer Sciences Extension plans to develop a comprehensive toolkit designed for both practitioners and everyday individuals. This toolkit will illuminate the complexities faced by people experiencing homelessness and offer valuable resources to improve how we assist them.
Results: This toolkit will deepen Kentuckian’s understanding of homelessness and provide practical strategies to support this population. Additionally, it will empower individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to advocate effectively on their behalf.
Public Value Statement: Addressing homelessness is vital as it affects thousands in Kentucky who face complex challenges, including mental health and substance use issues. Increasing public understanding and providing effective support empowers communities to create lasting positive change for this vulnerable population.
