Author: Gregg Rentfrow

Planning Unit: Animal and Food Sciences

Major Program: Agriculture and Extension Leadership Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

BBQ is extremely popular and other schools like North Carolina State University and Texas A&M University offer BBQ workshops that are extremely popular.  BBQ Basics is a brand new program that we wanted to beta test before we offer it to the public.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

The BBQ Basic, beta test participants took a tour of the major BBQ regions of the country and learned from local experts on how to make Beef Tri Tip from California, Texas Brisket, Kansas City Burnt Ends, as well as learned about the 4-H Poultry BBQ competition and tasted a recipe from the Cook Wild Kentucky collection.  The evening ended with a bourbon tasting and how bourbon and bourbon-based cocktails would pair with BBQ.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

28 MGCAFE personnel and commodity groups.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact.

The program was well received and participants suggestions are being incorporated into the first BBQ Basics program in July 2025.

Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
