Relevance: The postpartum period is a particularly vulnerable time for new mothers, as many face mental health challenges during this stage. Postpartum depression affects approximately 14.5% of individuals after giving birth, making it one of the most common maternal mental health conditions. Postpartum anxiety is also prevalent, with around 16% of new mothers reporting symptoms of anxiety following childbirth. Although less common, postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can also occur, adding to the spectrum of mental health issues that may arise during the postpartum period.
Response: In response to the growing awareness of postpartum mental health, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension is working in collaboration with colleagues from the College of Social Work and the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition to develop educational resources. These materials aim to provide education on the topic of postpartum mental health, coping strategies for those experiencing postpartum mental health challenges, as well as guidance for individuals looking to support loved ones during this time.
Results: Although the educational materials are still in development, there has already been expressed interest in the topic. These resources will help raise awareness of postpartum mental health among Kentuckians and serve as a valuable tool for individuals and communities alike.
Public Value Statement: Improving awareness of postpartum mental health supports the well-being of Kentucky mothers, children, and families. By providing accessible resources and education, we help reduce stigma, encourage early intervention, and strengthen community health.
