4-H Natural Resources Programming: Program Year 2025

Author: Rachel Guidugli

Planning Unit: 4-H Central Operations

Major Program: Natural Resources

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In 2025, the University of Kentucky 4-H Youth Development Natural Resources Programs reached a significant milestone—engaging 37,009 youth aged 5 to 18 across the Commonwealth in hands-on, impactful environmental education. These young Kentuckians explored the natural world through experiences in forestry, wildlife, water quality, conservation, and sustainable agriculture, gaining valuable knowledge and leadership skills.

This achievement was made possible by the dedication of 3,079 adult volunteers, who served as mentors and educators. Their commitment was evident in the 18,519 total hours they contributed, including 110 hours of multistate collaboration. These efforts were supported by a broader network of 7,773 total volunteers, who helped facilitate 109,338 contacts with local stakeholders, strengthening community engagement and program outreach.

A highlight of the program was the Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Academy (NRESci), a three-year educational experience for middle and high school students. Participants engaged in field research, explored Kentucky’s ecosystems, and developed leadership skills that prepared them for future careers.

Together, youth and volunteers formed a strong network of environmental advocates. Their collective efforts enhanced environmental literacy and fostered a deep appreciation for Kentucky’s natural resources.
