Increasing Kentuckian's mindfulness skills

Relevance: Over 50% of Americans report experiencing high levels of stress, which can negatively impact both physical and mental health. Chronic or extreme stress is closely linked to the development of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. One effective strategy for managing stress is mindfulness which is a practice that encourages individuals to stay present and attuned to their thoughts, emotions, and surroundings. By incorporating mindfulness into daily life, individuals can reduce stress levels, and in turn, lower the risk or severity of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
Response: Kentuckians need the knowledge and skills to effectively manage stress in their daily lives. Family and Consumer Sciences Extension is addressing this need by providing accessible, research-based resources. The first in this effort is Mindfulness for Your Mental Health, a foundational guide that introduces the concepts of mindfulness and offers practical strategies for incorporating it into everyday routines. This resource is designed to empower individuals with tools to support their mental well-being and will service as the cornerstone of a growing “Mental Health 101” toolkit.
Results: This resource was newly developed and published during the 2024-2025 program year. Despite its recent release, agents have expressed strong interest and indicated plans to use it with community members in the near future. The goal is to enhance Kentuckians understanding of mindfulness, ultimately helping to reduce stress levels and improve overall mental health and well-being across the state.
Public Value Statement: Practicing mindfulness can significantly enhance overall mental health and well-being. Family and Consumer Sciences Extension is actively working to increase Kentuckians’ knowledge and awareness of mindfulness, empowering individuals to incorporate this beneficial practice into their daily lives.
