Henry County Extension Celebrates a Century

Author: Krista Perry

Planning Unit: Henry County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

In 1925, Carl Malone journeyed from Iowa to Kentucky to become the first Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Extension Agent in Henry County. He served in this role for three years before returning to his home state. Since then, Henry County has been served by ten ANR Extension Agents, eleven 4-H Youth Development Extension Agents, and ten Home Economics/Demonstration & Family & Consumer Sciences Extension Agents.

The Henry County Extension Office boasts a proud 100-year legacy. It began in the county courthouse, later moved to the Kentucky Farm Bureau building, and eventually found a permanent home of its own. To celebrate this centennial milestone, the County Extension Council and Extension Agents organized a special 1920s-themed evening in the spring. The event featured appetizers, a historical display, and period-inspired attire. Former Extension Agents and staff, along with many community members, came together for the celebration. Carl Malone's story was shared by former ANR Extension Agent Steve Moore, bringing the past to life.

More than 80 people attended the event, including family members of former staff, all showing their support and appreciation for the Extension Office’s rich history. Guests enjoyed flipping through photo albums, reminiscing over shared stories, and watching a slideshow that traced the office’s journey from its beginning. The celebration was met with great enthusiasm and was a meaningful tribute to a century of service.
