Extension Offers Cultural Arts Activities and Programs

Planning Unit: Marshall County CES
Major Program: Quality Arts Engagement & Experiences
Plan of Work: Empowering Community Leaders
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
According to the 2024 census, the population of Marshall County is estimated at 31,734, with Benton being the largest city with a population of approximately 4,765. Neighboring cities that provide resources and cultural opportunities are approximately 35-50 miles away. Marshall County is a mostly rural community and could be considered limited in the opportunities for arts and cultural experiences.
The KEHA program of work includes a passport project that promotes Kentucky cultural arts and heritage. The goals include facilitating civic engagement, increasing knowledge of extended community, promoting group interaction, and developing awareness of historic surroundings. Reports are compiled and presented at the State meeting. Marshall County has participated in this project since 2022. Several members have also joined the Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association (KEHA) state chorus that performs at their annual meeting.
A recent opportunity through the local Children’s Arts Center offered programs and classes to 18 adults to expand their skill development and enjoy quality arts experiences. Instructors from the Center taught art principles and design basics at no charge to Extension participants.
In addition, 120 local clientele have participated in basket making classes at the Extension Office. These are offered by a local Kentucky Crafted artisan at a nominal fee. Each month features a high-quality basket that can be completed in a day. A class member recently remarked, “I never dreamed I could make something this beautiful!”. Classes are always at capacity, and many participants have joined other programs offered by Extension.
