Weekly Extension Radio Program on WVLE 99.3

Author: Colby Dye

Planning Unit: Allen County CES

Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership - ANR

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The 2022 USDA Agriculture Census reports that Allen County has 1,644 producers involved in the county agriculture industry. The Allen County Extension office offers a variety of programs and events to help educate and serve these producers while simultaneously offering programs in Family & Consumer Science and 4-H Youth Development which reach hundreds of other community members.

In order to better reach a large portion of clients across the county, the County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Allen County started a weekly radio program at local station WVLE 99.3 with co-host Chris Nelson. Every Wednesday at 7:35, the program airs live from the radio station where Chris and the agent discuss pertinent agriculture news happening locally and globally, including market trends, weather patterns, pest/disease pressures, and many other topics. In addition to agriculture news and upcoming programs, the radio program is also used to promote general extension events like 4-H trips and Homemaker workshops that are of interest to the other program areas.

Chris' long career in the radio broadcasting industry and the station's prominence in the community has allowed the program to reach 5,000 people each airing. After the first broadcast on May 7th, two community members contacted the office immediately after the show went off air to say they enjoyed the program and wanted to further discuss the topics. Since then, more listeners each week are requesting additional information about the topics discussed on air, and extension events such as the annual Farm to Fork dinner have seen increases in registration.
