Development and Implementation of Kentucky Intermediate Grazing School

The Kentucky Beginning Grazing School was established in 1996.  This two-day workshop provides new livestock producers with critical skills needed for designing and implementing a rotational grazing system. The curriculum has remained much the same for the past 28 years. In 2024, we redesigned the Kentucky Beginning Grazing School to focus on topics that would enable new and beginning graziers to have success. To compliment this curriculum, we developed the Kentucky Intermediate Grazing School. This school was designed to ease new graziers into the complex nuances of real-world grazing systems. Topics covered in the classroom included fencing and watering systems, managing tall fescue in grazing systems, strategies for mitigating drought, developing strong nutrient cycles, and providing shade for grazing livestock.  Hands on activities and demonstrations include determining available forage, setting up temporary paddocks and allocating enough forage for cattle and sheep for 24 hours, setting up a temporary watering system, and identification of important weeds and forages. Participants also explored the root architecture of different forage grasses and legumes by washing the soil from plants grown in plastic sleeves. This year’s program has more than 50 participants.  In a post-school survey, 90% of the participants agreed or strongly agreed that one or more of the management practices that they learned would increase the profitability of their operation. Participant comments included “excellent class”, “everything was amazing”, “best grazing school ever” and “enjoyed seeing the plant roots”.
