Improving Kindergarten Readiness Through Play and Partnership

In Kentucky, only 48% of children entering kindergarten are adequately prepared to succeed. In many counties, limited access to resources and supportive environments can hinder healthy early childhood development and physical activity.

To address this challenge locally, the Oldham County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent launched an innovative partnership with Crestwood Elementary, Centerfield Elementary, and Covenant Preschool to offer Laugh and Learn Playdates—a hands-on, interactive program designed to build critical early learning skills and boost kindergarten readiness.

The program engaged 142 adults and 468 children, offering age-appropriate activities that support social, emotional, and cognitive development. The results speak for themselves:

  • 100% of parents and teachers reported reading to their child(ren) at least three times per week.

  • 100% of parents or caregivers established simple rules and routines at home.

  • 100% of participants reported their child(ren) engaged in play with other children.

By connecting families with local schools and enriching early childhood experiences through play, this program is making a measurable difference in preparing Oldham County’s youngest learners for lifelong success.
