Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) have 64 sustainability coordinators across the network of elementary, middle and high schools. As part of the recent launch (2024) of the 5-Year Action plan in partnership with Green Schools National Network, FCPS is committed to preparing students for college and career and empowering students to evaluate decisions in the context of sustainability. UK is a key community partner along with students, parents, teachers, community partners, and others to help the school system reach their goals in the areas of environmental literacy, building and campus impact, and student/staff wellness.
At the request of Tresine Logsdon, FCPS energy and sustainability curriculum coordinator, UK Horticulture Extension Specialist Cindy Finneseth, highlighted departmental resources and Farm to School initiatives with sustainability components during a ‘speed date’ for the coordinators to learn about programs offered by community partners. Eighty people attended the event, with most expressing they gained new information they can use in school-based programming. In-depth conversations with 12 coordinators about resources and programming ideas, will help them implement effective programs for K-12 students.
