4-H Camp Develops Leaders

Plan of Work: Developing Leadership and Volunteerism

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Tuft University study of 4-H Youth Development has shown students that participation in 4-H tend to excel over peers that choose not to participate in the program. However, with many of our 4-H programs it is sometimes hard to see that impact in a short period of time.

Ten years ago the Hart County 4-H Youth Development Agent made a presentation at an elementary school promoting 4-H Camp. Two 3rd grade students signed up for 4-H Camp the next week. These same two students have now been to 4-H Camp for 10 years. First as a camper then as a teen counselor and now they have both attended camp this year as adult counselors at 4-H Camp.

This year they have recruited students to go to 4-H Camp, taught classes at camp, volunteered to drive the luggage truck and donated countless hours of their time to make sure students had as much fun as they did at camp when they were kids.

One volunteer wrote “Some of my best summer memories are from 4-H Camp. I have learned life skills and made lifelong friendships from 4-H Camp. I can only hope that I can make 4-H Camp as much fun for students now as the volunteers and teens did for me when I was a child.”
