Success StoryCamper to Full-Time Counselor: A Progressive Camping Experience

Camper to Full-Time Counselor: A Progressive Camping Experience

Author: Brian Good

Planning Unit: Bell County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Improve physical and mental health

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Nicolas (Nick) Mullins began his journey with Bell County 4-H at the age of nine, when he first participated in camping activities that sparked his lifelong passion for youth development and outdoor experiences. His initial excitement laid the groundwork for a series of increasingly responsible roles within the organization, including counselor in training, teen leader, and ultimately, adult volunteer. Over the span of 14 years immersed in the 4-H camping program, he cultivated a profound appreciation for the joy, camaraderie, and enriching environment that summer camp fosters among young people.
Recognizing the transformative potential of these experiences, he sought to extend the impact of camp beyond a single week each year. In 2025, Nick took a significant step forward in his commitment to youth engagement by accepting the position of full-time summer camp counselor at the JM Feltner Memorial 4-H Camp. In this role, he is responsible not only for leading a diverse array of educational classes but also for assisting with the scheduling of activities and organizing community gatherings throughout the camp week.
Nick attributes his readiness for this challenging yet rewarding position to the extensive skills and values he has developed through his long-standing involvement with Bell County 4-H. He highlights how the program has been instrumental in shaping his professional development, particularly in the areas of youth programming and outdoor education.
The Bell County 4-H camping program has undeniably gained a tremendous asset in Nick Mullins, whose dedication and enthusiasm inspire both campers and staff alike. As he looks toward the future, we are genuinely excited for the wealth of experiences and opportunities that await him in his ongoing journey to make a positive impact on the lives of young people.
