Success StoryA "Turn Around" for those in Need

A "Turn Around" for those in Need

Author: Ruth Chowning

Planning Unit: Bullitt County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: Active Living and Health Promotions, Aging

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In 2025 The Bullitt County Extension office began partnering with a local food bank and distribution site, The Turn Around Center, located in the southern part of the county.  As a non-profit, The Turn Around Center, uses volunteers to provide food boxes and a hot meal to those in need.  Over 400 individuals and families come for the food distribution center and the weekly meals served. With over 16% of the population living below the poverty line, this food bank serves the largest number of people allowing the Extension Service to reach an underserved audience.

The Family and Consumer Science department gave out healthy recipes using the food placed in the monthly distributed "food box".  One day each month the agent and program assistant would prepare a recipe using the food being distributed, give a mini talk and offer taste testing to those who came to pick up fresh produce.  Over 50% of those tasting the recipe reported they intended to make the recipe because it tasted so good and they had the food!   With interest growing from the recipes, classes are being scheduled to teach cooking skills using easy recipes.

As a result of the this work, a partnership developed with the school social service system who help over 50 families and children dealing with food insecurity.  Most recently those who were displaced by the local flooding.  The school social worker eager to solidify the partnership joined the advisory council for Family & Consumer Sciences.  Plans are ongoing to address the needs of those children and others for the 2025-2026 school year.
